A Mid Week Bible Study

On Thursday, January 21st we are going to start a mid-week Bible study. This is something I have been pondering quite a bit. My thinking has revolved around this point. Should we simply study another book of the Bible? Could we study through a DVD series? There are certainly plenty available. How about a solid Christian book? again, there are plenty of high quality choices available.
In the past few months, I have had many animated discussions with other pastors on the subject.
What we are going to do is akin to the basic format of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. There Pastor Chuck has preached topically on Sunday mornings and then come back and taught the exegesis of the Scriptures on Sunday evening. For example, if they were studying through Romans 1, then Pastor Chuck would preach topically on Sunday morning and then teach verse by verse Sunday evening. We will do the same with the exegesis on Thursday evening.
I believe this allows us to focus on living the Christian life on Sunday morning and then applying the same Scriptures again on Thursday. It also allows some topical series that can go in dept to issue while maintaining consistent Bible teaching. At this point it seems the best way to go for us as a church. I guess we will just see if the Lord is in it.

Alton Bay Conference

We are back from the Alton Bay Conference. What a true blessing it was. There was time to see many of our friends, to unwind to some extent, to be encouraged, and there was some excellent teaching as well.
For us, the past year has been a struggle. 1 year ago I have a very bad infection which overflowed my lung and required surgery. We have has controversy in the church which led to a church split. My dad is nearing the end of his days. It has been a real struggle. We have had some questions about continuing.
We felt God met us at the conference. He spoke clearly, consistently, and continuously about staying the course. As Alan Redpath said, “The toughest battles are fought right before the war is over.”
I am very grateful. Amen.
