Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.  Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved (1 Corinthians 10:31-33).

The Bible instructs us to not give offense for the glory of God that by do doing, people would be saved. Now those are some ’salty’ verses.

I have given more that my share of offense over the years. And for that fact, I have taken more than my share of offense. I need to stop it, you need to stop it, we all need to stop it. This is one of those instances where it is not more blessed to give than receive.

Only

Posted by: Jon Clayton | Comments (0)

scriptureFear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. Only fools despise wisdom and discipline (Proverbs 1:7, NLT).

Today is the 1st of March. Therefore, my reading from Proverbs today is chapter 1. What really struck me was this; Only fools despise wisdom and discipline (emphasis added). Only, that is a fairly exclusive term. I do not want to be a part of that group. But, I clearly see a need in my life for more wisdom as well as more discipline. And sometimes I resist discipline…

Seems that an attitude adjustment is in order. I need to seek after wisdom and embrace discipline. Wow! That is an attitude adjustment.

This is an only that I want no part of whatsoever.

Faith Is…

Posted by: Jon Clayton | Comments (1)

faithWell what is faith? How do we understand it? I believe that faith is being able to continue on with the assumption that there is hope even though everything around you in a worldly sense points to things being hopeless. When all you can see or predict has a likely or potentially negative outcome or an outcome that will continue toward an already downhill turn of events. This is where faith comes in. I look back on my life and I see that these are the times where God has performed the miracles. — Unknown

A Gazillionth Time

Posted by: Jon Clayton | Comments (0)

jonah1“The word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time.”  Jonah 3:1

We are all like Jonah, and we know it.  What hope do we have that the world will feel gospel impact through us?  The word of the Lord graciously comes to us a second time and a third time and a gazillionth time.  God loves us in spite of our disobedience; he also loves us out of our disobedience and into obedience.  We are going to Nineveh, that place of scary obedience.

Okay. — Ray Ortlund

Now THAT is a good word! Amen?

God Wastes Nothing

Posted by: Jon Clayton | Comments (0)

eyes_god“God does not waste an ounce of our pain or a drop of our tears; suffering doesn’t come our way for no reason, and He seems especially efficient at using what we endure to mold our character. If we are malleable, He takes our bumps and bruises and shapes them into something beautiful.” — Frank Peretti

Do As You Have Said

Posted by: Jon Clayton | Comments (0)

This is one of my favorite Spurgeon devotionals. “Do as you have said.” Amen.

“Do as thou hast said.”
2 Samuel 7:25
God’s promises were never meant to be thrown aside as waste paper; He intended that they should be used. God’s gold is not miser’s money, but is minted to be traded with. Nothing pleases our Lord better than to see His promises put in circulation; He loves to see His children bring them up to Him, and say, “Lord, do as Thou hast said.” We glorify God when we plead His promises. Do you think that God will be any the poorer for giving you the riches He has promised? Do you dream that He will be any the less holy for giving holiness to you? Do you imagine He will be any the less pure for washing you from your sins? He has said “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Faith lays hold upon the promise of pardon, and it does not delay, saying, “This is a precious promise, I wonder if it be true?” but it goes straight to the throne with it, and pleads, “Lord, here is the promise, ‘Do as Thou hast said.’” Our Lord replies, “Be it unto thee even as thou wilt.” When a Christian grasps a promise, if he do not take it to God, he dishonours Him; but when he hastens to the throne of grace, and cries, “Lord, I have nothing to recommend me but this, ‘Thou hast said it;’” then his desire shall be granted. Our heavenly Banker delights to cash His own notes. Never let the promise rust. Draw the word of promise out of its scabbard, and use it with holy violence. Think not that God will be troubled by your importunately reminding Him of His promises. He loves to hear the loud outcries of needy souls. It is His delight to bestow favours. He is more ready to hear than you are to ask. The sun is not weary of shining, nor the fountain of flowing. It is God’s nature to keep His promises; therefore go at once to the throne with “Do as Thou hast said.”
